Sanskrit Text

गंगा, जमुना, सुरसती, सात सिन्धु भरपूर।
‘तुलसी’ चातक के मते, बिन स्वाति सब धूर॥
- श्री तुलसीदास

Hindi Meaning

भले ही परम पवित्र नदियाँ जैसे गंगा, यमुना, सरस्वती और सातों समुद्र जल से भरे हों, परन्तु चातक पक्षी के लिए स्वाति नक्षत्र का जल छोड़कर बाकी सब जल धूल के समान है क्योंकि चातक अनन्य भाव से केवल स्वाति की बूँद की ही प्रतीक्षा करता है और उसी को ग्रहण करता है।
भाव यह है कि चाहे संसार में कितनी ही महान विभूतियाँ क्यों न हों, परन्तु एक सच्चा प्रेमी अपने प्रियतम के अतिरिक्त किसी और को स्वीकार नहीं करता और न ही किसी अन्य से कुछ चाह रखता है।

Transliteration

Ganga, Jamuna, Surasati, Saat Sindhu Bharpoor. ‘Tulasi’ Chatak Ke Mate, Bin Swati Sab Dhoor. - Shri Tulsidas Even if the most sacred rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarasvati, along with all seven oceans, were overflowing with water, for the chataka bird, they would still be insignificant, because it never accepts anything other than the raindrops that fall from the Swati star. In the same way, the exclusive love of a true devotee is such that, even when surrounded by countless exalted beings, His heart longs only for His beloved (deity), and desires nothing from anyone else.
