Radhashtami

The appearance festival of Srimati Radharani, the supreme deity and life-breath of Braj Rasiks.

Historical Roots & Origin

Radhashtami commemorates the divine appearance of Srimati Radharani in Barsana. In the Radhavallabh Sampradaya founded by Shri Hit Harivansh, Radhashtami is the largest festival of the year, celebrated with nine days of continuous chanting, devotional songs (Badhai pads), and dynamic temple processions.

Spiritual & Theological Meaning

For Braj Rasiks, Radha is not just a consort, but the supreme sovereign controller of the universe and the source of Krishna's bliss. Celebrating Her appearance means dedicating oneself to Her lotus feet and praying for Her confidential sahachari service.

Traditional Celebration & Rituals

In Barsana and Vrindavan, temples open at 4:00 AM for the grand bathing ceremony (Abhishek) of the deity using milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sacred water. Temple courtyards are filled with saffron powder, and yellow flags are hoisted on all buildings.
